Metamorphosis
an exhibition of photographs by Rid Burman

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Born in eastern India in the city of Calcutta, Burman grew up amongst literature, art and sculpture, when he was 13, he moved in the desert. Rajasthan, the color, life, light and everything else provoked an amazing urge to create. He fell in love with the dirt and sand and wanted to capture the life that had evolved around it. So he took to the streets , photographing the people and the different factors that influenced the life he was in love with. The evolution of his mind therefore began when he was riding camels in the desert in India. Destiny took him to several different parts of the country, he graduated from Delhi university and started working for the Time in India, travelled to the south of India and documented different tribes for a year. Thats when he met Paul Liebhardt, who understood his apetite for this medium and introduced him to Brooks Institute of Photography in California. America opened up several avenues, he learned about Guy Bourdin, Helmut Newton, voyerism, german expressionism. The whole world changed, he wanted to shoot like Steven Klien, Steven Meisel, fashion, but with stories. While still a student he moved to Los Angeles and took over a warehouse, converted it to a photostudio and started exploring the possibilities of producing work that he would dream of. Presently he is shooting for various editorial and commercial clients between NewYork and Los Angeles.

HIS WORK

Fashion, its such a distorted perception of reality. Often to me it comes across this form of abstract art but involving real life subjects for experiments. Think of the greatest designers today, John Galliano or Alexander Mqeen, their work is absolutely brilliant, but at the same time it is so far beyond the average mind, it dazzles me. I am very intrigued about its origin, probably bcause of its authenticity and purity in terms of creativity.
You walk in the Alexander Mqueen showroom in Soho, New York, its like taking a trip in some sort of a time machine.

Everything , the whole package is a mix of different eras, from the Victorian to 2000 yrs from now, unbelievable. John Gallianos on the other hand is very theatrical. He is all about over the top, a mix of late 17th -18th century , very dark and goth, every time I see his work it kind of reminds of the Phantom of the Opera.
Now comes the Tom Fords and the Marc Jacobs and the Yves Saint laurents. “Where would you be if it was not for them right”, I ask a beautiful young lady walking down Fifth Ave near the Rockerfeller centre. She looks at me in surprise and says “are you insane……, they are all really trashy, I only wear Chloe. Louis Vuitton is my other favourite but they have been really repetitive.”
Funny,…..I often wondered what was more important to her, her Hand Bag or her Health Insurance?
