Kolkata Smiles
an exhibition of kolkata’s cartoons heritage
Cartoon has always been one of the most direct and unbiased mode of art form which not only reflects the society but holds the potential to change its very course. However, so powerful an art form has always remained underrated in India, especially in Kolkata.
Weavers Studio Centre for the Arts proposes to make an effort to give shape to a program which would include selected works of various cartoonists, both living and dead, showcasing their specific field of genius, may it be in the field of social cartoon or political cartoon. A two week long exhibition will be held in the month of 14 July 2008. This will also include a day long seminar aimed at sensitizing the general public regarding the various aspects of the art of cartooning through arranging interactive sessions with such celebrated cartoonists from Kolkata who have dedicated their lives in providing the city with mirrors which reflects as well as criticizes the various inconsistencies in its social, political and cultural life. The proposed panel is to include such celebrated cartoonists like Chandi Lahiri, Rebotibhushan Ghosh, Amal Chakraborty, Kutty, as also their famous legacy bearers like Anup Ray and Debashish Deb.
The intention of this program is not only to enlighten but also to inspire the upcoming generations into taking up cartooning and to express their views, grievances and desires through this enormously impactful medium. Weavers Studio Centre for the Arts hopes to be the initiator of a movement which would ultimately lead to archivation and regular display of cartoons of the past and the present as an individual art form and to breathe a new life into this dying art.
